Dyeing your hair can give you that new look or change in the hair color you desire.
However, constant use of traditional hair dyes which contain potentially toxic and damaging chemicals like ammonia or parabens can permanently damage your hair or lead to hair loss.
One way to avoid these chemicals is through the use of natural hair dyes such as Beetroot which not many people know about. This red vegetable contains betacyanins, a type of betalains, which contribute to their deep red color.
Beetroots are packed with nourishing vitamins, minerals, flavonoids, and antioxidants like carotenoids is a natural remedy for improving hair health and hair growth. It also offers incredible benefits for hair health when applied directly to the hair.
Here are 3 DIY Beetroot dye recipes you can try at home.
1. Beetroot mixed with coconut or olive oil
The nourishing properties of coconut and olive oil when mixed with beetroot can enhance your hair color and hydrate your hair at the same time. Its moisturizing and hydrating properties can also help make your hair glossy and shiny when you wash your hair after the application of beet hair dye.
∙ Cut the beetroot into pieces then wrap the pieces in aluminum foil and bake them for 30 minutes at 200 degrees centigrade. Blend the baked beets to extract the juice. ∙ Mix 3 tablespoons of virgin coconut or olive oil into the extracted beet juice. ∙ Wear plastic gloves and apply the above mixture over your hair. Make sure that no hair strands are left so that color is distributed properly.
∙ Cover your head completely with a plastic wrap.
∙ Apply the mixture to your hair and let it sit for an hour. If you want a darker hue leave it for 2 hours.
∙ Rinse and wash your hair with slightly warm water.
2. Beetroot mixed with carrot and sugar
Sugar helps in making the color of the beets intense and lasts longer. Carrot and sugar together can help get a smooth paste when mixed with the beetroot.
∙ Mix the extraction of beet juice and carrot juice with 2 tablespoons of sugar. ∙ Heat the mixture to form a smooth paste.
∙ The mixture should be runny for easy application. The stickiness of sugar will allow the mixture to become more intense and therefore the color will have a better effect. ∙ Let the mixture sit for an hour and wash your hair to see the result.
3. Beetroot mixed with black tea or coffee
If you wish to have darker shades of hair color using beetroots you can opt for this recipe. You can also add some natural oils for extra nourishment.
∙ Extract the juice of 2 large beets and mix it with half a cup of freshly brewed coffee or tea.
∙ Add two teaspoons of your favorite natural oil and mix it.
∙ Apply the mixture and let it sit for 1 hour.
∙ Wash your hair and condition it
